James Stewart is the protagonist. He is a popular and successful student who appears to have everything going his way, but a troubled home life and worries about college belie his happy life. He is partially responsible for the wreck that kills six of his friends, and he is sent to prison for his role in the accident. He struggles in prison, dealing with attacks, death threats, and his desperate loneliness as he tries to forgive himself. He finds redemption when he returns to his community and begs the father of his best friend who died in the wreck to forgive him. James appears in all ten episodes.
Michael’s relationship with James is rocky, primarily because Michael is a self-employed record/concert producer who is working 24/7 and has little time for James. This scene displays their conflict which is resolved later in a later episode. Michael appears in 9 episodes.
Evelyn is a loving and caring mother, and while she has gone off on a international mission for their church, she remains committed to helping her son when he needs it. She returns early from her overseas mission as soon as she learns of the wreck. Ryan is Ben’s father. Ryan arrives at the scene of the wreck and finds Ben still alive. He goes with him to the hospital where Ben dies. This short scene is highly emotional. Ryan is featured at other key scenes and plays an important role in the conflict resolution for James who finds forgiveness and redemption when Ryan overcomes his grief at the end of the miniseries and forgives James for his part in the accident.
Reverend John Wright is the minister at James Church. He appears in three main scenes in the miniseries. In all three he gives sermons to the congregation. He gives three sermons in the miniseries, one at the beginning, one in the middle, and one at the end, where he apologizes and asks James to forgive him. All three sermons are powerful statements that provide structure for the series, establish the theme, and illustrate the power and meaning of forgiveness.
Benjamin Lee, often called Ben, is James’ best friend and sidekick. His father is Ryan Lee, who plays a key role in the story. Ryan blames James for Ben’s death. The conflict between James and Ryan encapsulates the main conflict for James. Ben is socially engaging but naïve about life in general. His death becomes the central focus of the story. Benjamin appears in episodes 1-4.
Charlotte is picked on by her friends and appears weak, but she has a hidden strength that is revealed when she stands up to adults that adults that she believes are wrong. She becomes James girlfriend when he returns to the community after prison.
Scarlet’s mother, Alice Moore, is a schoolteacher. Scarlet’s father (Greyson) is a CPA. They are loving parents and have a good relationship with Scarlet. They appear early in the series and struggle with her death in later episodes.
Claire and Nathan, the parents of Andrew Stevens, who is dating Scarlet Moore. are supportive of Andrew and Scarlet’s relationship. Just like their parents, Andrew and Scarlet are childhood sweethearts and expect to marry. Nathan is a mechanic, but he owns his own auto repair shop. The family is close and loving. Both parents are featured in later episodes after the wreck as they struggle with their grief over Andrews's and Scarlet's death.
Andrey and Dylan Martin, parents of Jack and Sam, are loving parents but are inattentive to their teenage son's risk taking, which plays out tragically with they are both killed in the wreck. Dylan is an attorney. His knowledge of the law is on display in some scenes where the parents discuss James culpability in the accident.
Eleanor is a single mother. She loves Sarah she struggles in later scenes after Sarah is killed in the wreck. Scene 8 shows her dealing with Sarah, who is James best friend. Sarah engages in risk taking behavior and hides it from her mother. Eleanor plays an important role in her own struggle with Sarah’s death. She is the next to last holdout in forgiving James for his role in the accident.
Olivia and Sarah are competing for James. Sarah is James best friend but James is dating Olivia because he has to take her to the prom. Sarah is confident that it is just for show, but the conflict boils over before the accident. Both girls are replaced by Charlotte when she becomes his girlfriend when he returns to the community after prison.
Blue Man is the head of an inside prison gang, meaning they don’t exist outside the prison. Members belong to this gang out of self-defense but they don’t want to be associated with a gang when they get out. Blue Man is a tough leader, but he stops short of being a really dark figure, as he would if he was the leader of a street gang (that exists both inside the prison and outside, on the street).
Christopher Howard is a pivotal character in the miniseries. We see him in a few early scenes, when he investigates a death in the shower, but we don’t know much about him until episode 8, when he enters James Cell to talk with James. This is a powerful scene, and he reveals part of his life story, which will play out in tragically in episode 9, when he is killed in the prison riot. James shares the whole story of Christopher’s life at the end of the series in episode 10, to the entire prison population, when he gives Christopher’s eulogy, at the request of the Warden.
Frank Carter is exactly what you would expect a Prison Ministry Pastor to be. He is kind, understanding, and empathetic, but he does expect the members to follow the rules. He lays an important role in expressing the theme of forgiveness which flows through all the episodes.
Guitar Pick’s real name is Carl wood. Because his nickname is his stage name, he is the one prisoner in the prison ministry that doesn’t have to use his real name. He is a music star who was convicted of DUI right after his first album. He acts as a surrogate father to James, a role that comes easy to him. He teaches James to play the guitar and encourages him to write songs. They perform together at the prison concert in episode 9.
Judge Baker appears in only one scene. The role is short but important. It places the focus on James but it is what the Judge has to say that delivers the impact of the scene as James faces his fate for his role in the accident.
Roman appears in only one scene, via a Zoom call with Michael Stewart. He is a tough and experienced businessman who creates challenges for Michael Stewart. It is critical that Michael closes his deal with Roman, so Roman has the upper hand, and he plays it to his advantage.
Warden Kelly is a no-nonsense administrator. This is his main scene, in which he tells James that the prison Guard who was killed in the riot, asked that James speak at his funeral. The full answer to why he made this last request is revealed in the next scene, when James presents his eulogy to the entire prison population, in episode 10.
